Bread Oven 2012

Bread Oven for Baking

The bread or empanadas in this case are prepared and placed in a well oiled preheated pan.

Laying flat on the bottom and sides of the pan, they are turned half way through baking so as to brown and cook the other side.

This is the way that the Miskito people bake bread in the villages.  The fire is then placed on top of the pan.

Not very efficient.  We would like to build an oven for baking.

If you would like to see plans of what we are hoping to build you can access them here at the Rocket Baking Oven

Looking to raise $______________ for this project.

Greenhouse Project 2012

Update: October 2012.

The green house is almost complete.  The roof is up, the beds are in.  We are lacking only to finish filling the beds with good soil and finishing the watering system.  Thank you all!

We are slowly filling the beds with a good mix of sandy soil, black dirt, rice hulls, wood ash, worm fertilizer.

In January 2012 we opened fundraising for a new project to build a Watershelter Greenhouse.  In one month we had raised enough to be able to build the green house.

Why do you need a greenhouse?
  • Tropical Rain quickly
    • washes away topsoil
    • leches away nutrients
    • compacts the ground so the roots can not penetrate the hardened dirt
  • Bugs are hard to control without strong pesticides
  • Sun is too hot during certain seasons, shading is needed during these times.
Marilyn's goal is to try to enable the villages to see what can be grown around their own houses using greenhouses.  If this model works we can reproduce it in the village.

The greenhouse will have cement block raised growing beds, rain collection system with a slow drip watering system, opaque roofing to filter in the light but stop the rain, and a worm composting farm area for producing natural fertilizer.

Village Housing

Village Houses

The local village houses are built out of wood on wood stilts.  The average house lasts about 3-5 years before needing to be rebuilt.   After the hurricane there are a few families that are unable to rebuild their dilapidated houses.  An old widow, a single mother, a poor family with a crippled father, a poor lay pastor.  We would like to try and raise money to build a house for each of them. Cement will last many generations and will serve as a shelter for the village people during a hurricane.

Cost of a new cement house: $3500
October 13, 2009: We have $1700 of the $3500 raised for our first widow's house. See the pictures of the house. We plan to start in December and put up the walls in February. If you are interested in a project, this is the one!

Education Program

Education Program

Education on a practical level is missing in many of the villagers lives and thought processes.  As often as possible we prepare and present a topic in various villages.  Such as "What is electricity?" and "Hurricanes".  Concentrating our efforts in the areas of science, health and the gospel.

Aviation Program

Aviation Program

The villages in much of Northeast Nicaragua are far up the river, requiring many days travel by river to get to them. This presents very hard conditions for people with severe illness, accidents or women in labor. They must travel many days down the river to get to the regional hospital.  An airplane is able to reach many of these villages on the river giving people access to emergency medical transport. This saves many lives.
The second benefit of an aviation program is to transport Pastors and Conference workers to visit villages up the river and in more remote spots of Northeast Nicaragua.  Right now there are many villages that have an Adventist presence but have not had another Adventist member, Pastor or Conference worker visit them in years because of their remoteness. The airplane will give access for Pastor’s and others to visit these villages and encourage our members already there as well as helping the church to grow with new members.
Monthly Budget: $1,000 (gasoline)
Airstrips: $5,000 each (estimate, depends on the runway)
Trip cost (saves 1 person's life, usually costs $150)

Agriculture Program

Agriculture Program

Help support the agriculture program.  We need seeds for our garden as well as seeds to distribute to villagers.  Tools are necessary as well as fencing to keep the animals out of the gardens.

Work Program

Work Program

The Miskito people of Nicaragua are subsistence farmers.  If they don’t grow food, they have to buy it.  We provide work for many families in the village.  They work on the mission grounds, in the agriculture program, village work, etc.  With the money from this work they are able to purchase – flour, sugar, oil, salt – none of which they can grow on their plantations.
Cost per day per person: $6.00
Average cost per month to support a family: $120
